This presentation addresses the “missing middle” in mental healthcare – the gap for young people whose needs are not adequately met by traditional services. We introduce the Human Nature Program, a nature-based therapeutic model that delivers  therapy and mentoring outside conventional settings. Drawing on the evaluation of Human Nature by Charles Sturt University, we present evidence of significant positive impacts on participants’ mental health and wellbeing. By combining these findings with powerful stories from the field told by Human Nature mentors, we show how this innovative approach can help bridge a critical service gap.

About the Presenter

From chasing goannas in the remote Central Australian desert to leading a dynamic team in the Northern Rivers, Kane’s journey has been shaped by a deep commitment to connecting with people. Kane’s early career in out-of-home care showed the lasting effects of adversity and the importance of meeting people where they are. Now, as Clinical Manager and Accredited Mental Health Social Worker at Human Nature, Kane remains passionate about building trust and reducing barriers so that young people can access the mental health support that works for them. His goal is to walk alongside others and support meaningful change through genuine connection and compassionate, person-centred practice. Kane is grateful for the opportunity to lead a team of dedicated mental health professionals who share this vision.
