This year’s Social Sciences Week program reflects a growing recognition of an important reality: social sciences are central to understanding and addressing the most pressing issues facing the world today.
As demonstrated by the recent Why Science Needs the Social event, held as a collaboration between National Science Week and Social Sciences Week, solving complex issues such as climate change, AI, health and inequality requires both social and technical expertise.
This view is reinforced by the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia’s recently released report, Social Sciences for Australia’s Future, which highlights the critical role of social science in safeguarding Australia’s future through driving innovative and practical solutions to the nation’s challenges.
Social Sciences Week events, including Principal Sponsor RMIT’s feature event, AI Data Centres: Exploring the Buildings Behind the AI Boom, bring together interdisciplinary researchers and experts to explore new perspectives on complex questions facing society, like Australia’s digital transformation and the impacts of emerging technologies.
Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia Fellow and Distinguished Professor Lisa Given said RMIT was proud to contribute to this work.
“Social sciences touch many aspects of Australians’ lives, helping us understand the people, communities and issues that shape our society.
From the ways we engage with emerging technologies such as AI and renewable energy systems, to the challenges and opportunities facing communities across the country, social sciences are essential in shaping informed public debate and driving evidence-based decision-making.
Social Sciences Week is an important opportunity to showcase the breadth and impact of this work, and RMIT is proud to once again be a Principal Sponsor of the national program.
At RMIT, we’re proud to lead interdisciplinary research that brings together expertise from the social sciences, STEM and beyond to tackle some of society’s most pressing challenges.”
