A celebration of our “other” sciences

Media Release – Thursday 2 September 2021

Science has been deservedly recognised during the pandemic: we’ve had a stark reminder of the importance of our medical scientists and epidemiologists.  But equally important and less visible have been a host of ‘other’ sciences – the social sciences.

Made up of dozens of disciplines (law, economics, politics, education and linguistics are just a small sample), what all social sciences have in common is their focus on issues vital for understanding humanity, society and institutions like courts, political systems and schools, including how these institutions respond to a global pandemic.

From 6-12 September, Australia’s top social researchers and commentators and writers will be joined by well-known names like Noam Chomsky, Chanel Contos and Yumi Stynes in over 66 free online events as part of the fourth annual Social Sciences Week.

Events at #SSW2021 (livestreamed and open to all) will cover the vast range of topics researched by social scientists. This year’s talks and panels explore everything from conspiracies through to the politics of bad behaviour. There’s also our free lockdown trivia to use at any time with friends or colleagues.

Organising Committee Chair and event founder, Professor Dan Woodman from the University of Melbourne said as the pandemic drags on the value of the social sciences becomes ever clearer.

“During the pandemic we have seen sociologists understanding the impact of working and studying from home; economists working through the ramifications of budget stimulus packages; anthropologists helping coordinate responses across cultural groups and psychologists supporting mental health and resilience.”
